CSU Saxophone Studio

Saxophone majors at Columbus State University play all styles of music, from classical to jazz, and perform frequently as soloists and as members of various types of small and large ensembles.

The primary focus within the saxophone studio at CSU’s Schwob School of Music is an understanding that consistent practice is the key to success. Consistent, intelligent practicing is necessary for technical facility, musical expression, and improvement in any kind of skill. In addition to a daily regimen of technical exercises and études, students study and perform works from the saxophone’s classical solo repertoire.

Chamber music is also an important element of this studio and all saxophone majors play in saxophone quartets. Over the course of a four-year degree, each student gains experience playing each of the four saxophones in the quartets. Mixed chamber music is also encouraged and members of the saxophone studio are often heard in performance on other studio recitals.

All saxophone majors participate in the various jazz ensembles at CSU. Issues of jazz and commercial music are addressed within the studio, but performance in big band and small group settings is essential to truly understand these styles.

Saxophone majors also gain a great deal of performance experience in the Wind Symphony and the Wind Orchestra.

The studio is comprised of students pursuing the degrees of Bachelor of Music in Performance (B.M.), Bachelor of Music in Music Education (B.M. Mus.Ed.), or Bachelor of Arts (B.A.). The saxophone studio may also include graduate students pursuing the degree of Master of Music in Music Education (M.M. Mus.Ed.).
